Seyir Quartier – Zelal Dicle Baz is a fellow of the literature residency

We are pleased to announce that Zelal Dicle Baz has been selected as the first fellow for the Seyir Quartier literary residency. The aim of the residency is to promote cultural exchange in the field of literature between Turkey and Germany and to support the literary development of young Turkish writers. Zelal Dicle Baz will be a guest in Cologne for a six-week stay.

Our jury – consisting of curator and writer Didem Yazıcı, scholar, editor and translator Şebnem Sunar and writer Selim Özdoğan – justified their decision as follows:

“Zelal Dicle Baz deals with her themes from various perspectives and with an original view of the experience of being a woman. Her clear use of the Turkish language, combined with a confident and powerful writing style, played an essential role in our selection. As she expressed in her application, her enthusiasm for ‘observing the cultural practices of different communities and engaging with them through the opportunities that life in the city offers’ corresponds exactly to the spirit of this residency. We also believe that she will be able to further explore the socio-political issues she has previously examined. For these reasons, we unanimously selected her for the first episode of the Seyir Quartier residency.”

Zelal Dicle Baz was born in Ankara in 1998 and is a graduate of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Her debut collection of short stories, “Sterben in einem Gästehaus” (Dying in a Guest House), was awarded the Yaşar Nabi Nayır Short Story Award. She currently lives in Istanbul.
