Simon Rummel & Tina Tonagel – Recovery on Board

Curated by Lisa Bensel & Theresa Nink

Three self-invented instruments transformed the Q18 into a slowly changing and constantly evolving sound space that invited visitors to linger. Without a defined beginning or set end, the motor-driven music machines played themselves and generated a continuously transforming sound and light situation that remained unpredictable on the one hand, but clearly legible in its conditionality on the other.

In the combination of traditional sculptural materials, wooden resonating bodies, glass bulbs, strings of stringed instruments and programmable electrical engineering, the instruments became kinetic sculptures that modulated the space in terms of sound and optics.
The exhibition invited visitors to expose themselves to a process of perception, the duration of which they could decide for themselves.

In the collaboration between the composer Simon Rummel and the media artist Tina Tonagel, different approaches to sound, space and visuality met.
