The biennial exchange with the Kyoto Art Center takes place every two years. Artists of various disciplines from Cologne and Kyoto can each spend up to 8 weeks in the other city and are selected by a jury at the place of dispatch. Most recently, Hervé Garcia from Quartier am Hafen was nominated as a fellow for Kyoto in 2024.
The Kyoto Art Center was founded in April 2000 with the aim of comprehensively promoting the arts in Kyoto — through cooperation between the city of Kyoto, artists and other art professionals.
The center aims to support diverse artistic activities, provide information about art, and promote communication between citizens and artists through art.
The Kyoto Art Center focuses on the following three key areas:
- Supporting young artists in their activities, regardless of genre or style.
- Collecting and disseminating information about art and culture through various media.
- Promoting exchange between artists and citizens, as well as among artists.
The center’s activities include exhibitions, tea ceremonies, traditional stage performances, concerts, dance performances and various workshops for the further education of artists and other art enthusiasts. In addition, innovative projects are initiated to preserve traditional arts and create new art forms.
