The Miraculous Mandarin
TANZRESIDENZ Austausch mit dem suzanne dellal center – ZEITRAUM: 24.8. bis 15.10.2025
Hila is this year’s guest choreographer for a two-month residency at Quartier am Hafen, part of the collaboration with the Suzanne Dellal Center in Tel-Aviv. Working with dancers Shira Glinka and Stav Azari, she will develop an extended version of their award-winning trio from last year’s 1|2|3 Plattform. The new work will premiere at the (Rh)einfach Fest at Tanzfaktur in Cologne in October 2025.
KÜNSTLERISCHES VORHABEN
“The Miraculous Mandarin” trio is set to Béla Bartók’s powerful, controversial orchestral piece, originally a pantomime ballet (1918–1924). Three dancers embody the music’s layered tensions through conical movement, minimalism, and obsessive repetition. Central is a duality of constraint versus chaos, shown by cyclical, looping choreography reflecting obsessive thought patterns. They move in ritualistic circles, each an individual force, contrasting with the brutal, urgent score symbolizing fate. While sharing space and drive, dancers reveal fleeting personal struggles, mirroring the original’s themes of desire, violence, and power. Bartók’s avant-garde work, marked by harsh dissonance and primal energy, was radical and often banned but remains emotionally raw. The choreography channels the music’s psychological urgency, with dancers shifting between unified and fragmented movement, blending contemporary dance and hip-hop for a fresh, rhythmically precise response to Bartók’s dynamic shifts.
