With a common performance of Marinella Senatore’s „Renn Lieber Renn – Protest Forms: Memory and Celebration“

For the exhibition act at the Q18 in Cologne, nearly thirty international artists created new instructions that are to be performed by the recipients of this exceptional exhibition format. The verbal instructions aim at the action, non-action, and reflection of the recipients who carry them out, thus shifting the focus on the relationship between artist, work, recipient, idea, and performance.

In the process, aspects of authorship, the dissolution of the boundaries of current art forms, and the creative formal composition of conceptual approaches are addressed. What come into view are not least also questions concerning the conception of the viewer’s position and the possibilities of participation. The relationship between idea, concept, and performance is renegotiated in each case and is therefore processually and situatively influenced by those present.

Artistic instructions are generally based on language and drawing as the instruments and materials of art. The nature of the instructions of the artistic works in the exhibition act represents a range of different approaches that correspond with each the artists’ method. Whether performative or intrinsic, with or without a public, the artistic instructions not only initiate actions and thoughts, but at the same time prompt reflections on overriding social as well as individually relevant topics that in this choice of artists often make reference to a specific perception of the spatial and social surroundings, as well as physical experiences, the relationship between body and mind, the presence of voice, movements, embodiment, and the possibilities of intersubjective exchange.
